The history of airship travel is inextricably linked to one of the most spectacular and tragic accidents of the 20th century: the crash of the "Hindenburg" on May 6, 1937. The explosion of the gigantic zeppelin over Lakehurst Airport in New Jersey became one of the first major global media events in the history of photography and film.

A new "Universum History" documentary from ORF reopens the case, illuminating not only the causes of the disaster, but also the airship's role as a propaganda tool and its lasting legacy in the collective memory. Decades after the accident, new findings and rediscovered footage provide surprising clues about the course of events and refute old conspiracy theories.

A giant in the sky: The rise of airships

The "Hindenburg" was a masterpiece of engineering. When it first rolled out of the production hall in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance in 1936, it was considered a symbol of technological progress and a new era in air travel. With a length of 245 meters and a diameter of over 41 meters, it was the largest aircraft ever built. The Hindenburg was intended to revolutionize passenger travel across the Atlantic by offering travelers a luxurious and fast alternative to ocean liners. The interior was lavishly designed, with passenger cabins, a dining room, and a spacious lounge. The speed and comfort of the journey were unprecedented at the time.

The Nazi government in Germany quickly recognized the potential of the giant Zeppelins for its image promotion. As aviation historian Dan Grossman explains in the documentary, the "Hindenburg" became a powerful propaganda symbol, intended to demonstrate the supposed superiority of German technology and engineering. The airship bore the swastika on its tail and was presented as an ambassador of the Reich during display flights and overpasses. This political appropriation contributed to the perception of the accident not only as a technical failure, but also as a political act.

Collective memory and the role of the media

The explosion of the Hindenburg on May 6, 1937, which occurred just moments before landing, became a major media event. The footage of the accident, taken by reporters and camera crews on site, was among the first disaster photos and films to be distributed worldwide. The radio report by reporter Herbert Morrison, whose emotional and shocked voice documented the disaster in real time, became particularly famous. "Oh, the humanity!" he cried desperately as he described the burning airship. These images were deeply etched in the collective consciousness and contributed significantly to the end of the era of passenger airship travel. Within barely a minute, the Hindenburg burned up because it was filled with highly flammable hydrogen. 35 of the 97 passengers and crew on board were killed, as was one member of the ground crew.

Although the official investigation was never able to definitively determine the cause of the accident, speculation about a bomb attack or sabotage quickly took center stage. The fact that the airship was used as a propaganda tool fueled these conspiracy theories. The new "Universum History" documentary explores these theories and shows how researchers are reopening the question of what caused the fire.

New clues and scientific clarification

Decades after the accident, aviation historian Dan Grossman accidentally stumbles upon old amateur film footage. This previously unknown material provides new clues that shed new light on the exact course of events. Together with pilot and aviation expert Jason Harris, he attempts to finally solve the mystery of the crash. Their research takes them to Germany, to the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, which houses the world's largest archive on the history and construction of airships.

The findings from the examination of the rediscovered material are being incorporated into a series of scientific tests at the renowned California Institute of Technology. There, the exact physical circumstances of the explosion are being simulated in laboratory experiments. The researchers are focusing on the question of where the spark that triggered the fire came from. One of the most frequently discussed theories is that an electrostatic discharge, i.e., a spark from a thunderstorm cell, ignited the leak in the hydrogen tank. The airship had passed through a thunderstorm front before landing. This scientific investigation is intended to dispel any remaining doubts about the exact cause of the accident and finally put to rest speculation about sabotage.

The crash of the Hindenburg marked the end of passenger airship travel, which was replaced by a safer and faster alternative: the airplane. However, the images of the accident remain a haunting testament to the risks and fascination of early aviation history and a reminder of how quickly a seemingly unstoppable progress can turn into a painful tragedy.
