Ticket prices for North American flights rise after Czech Republic qualifies for World Cup

The successful qualification of the Czech national football team for the FIFA World Cup 2026 has triggered a massive surge in demand in the Czech travel market.

Immediately after the sporting success on April 1st, search volume for transatlantic flights skyrocketed. Destinations in Mexico, where the Czech team will play the majority of its group matches, are particularly popular with fans. Martina Hrnčířová, Sales Manager at Student Agency, confirms that booking figures for North America are showing significant increases, as supporters are already finalizing their travel plans for the tournament, which runs from June 11th to July 19th, 2026.

This surge in demand is clearly reflected in airline pricing. The cost of flights to the host cities has already risen considerably and is continuing its upward spiral. The steepest price increase is currently seen on flights to Atlanta, where tickets are up to 33 percent more expensive than regular scheduled flights. Flights to Guadalajara have also become more expensive, rising by around 26 percent, while prices to Mexico City have reacted more moderately so far, with an increase of approximately 8 percent. With the national team's match dates now set, bookings are concentrated on specific days, further driving up prices on those dates.

A striking trend is the combination of sporting events and traditional leisure holidays. Many Czech fans are opting for destinations like Cancún, which, while not directly hosting matches, offers better flight connections and more attractive prices. From there, travelers plan onward travel to the stadiums. Currently, round-trip flights from Prague or Vienna range from 17.500 to just under 23.000 Czech crowns. Experts anticipate that as time progresses and flight availability decreases, the availability of affordable fares will become significantly more limited throughout North America.

Additional market analyses indicate that, in addition to the pure flight costs, hotel capacity in host cities like Guadalajara and Mexico City is already becoming scarce. Travel agencies are responding with special charter offers and package deals to cope with the surge in demand. The logistical challenge is compounded by the distribution of the host cities across three countries – the USA, Mexico, and Canada – forcing fans to make complex multi-stop bookings. The Czech travel industry is preparing for one of the strongest summer quarters in recent years in the long-haul travel segment.
