With the start of the summer holidays in the eastern federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, as well as in several German federal states, the Austrian infrastructure company Asfinag is preparing for a considerable strain on the high-level road network.
Heavy traffic is expected on the main transit routes starting this coming weekend, with particular attention being paid to the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9), the Tauern Autobahn (A10), the Inntal Autobahn (A12), and the Brenner Autobahn (A13). Delays are also anticipated in the greater Vienna area, where the concurrent Danube Island Festival is generating significant local traffic, as well as in Upper Austria in connection with the "Woodstock of Brass Music" festival. Border controls at the crossings to Germany, Hungary, and Slovenia are likely to further increase waiting times for long-distance traffic.
Beyond the usual influx of holidaymakers, scheduled inspections and exercises will put a strain on the motorway network during the first week of the summer holidays. On the night of July 6th to 7th, 2026, the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) will be closed for four hours in the southbound direction in the area of the Gleinalm Tunnel for an official assessment of fire damage. Another temporary total closure will affect the Murtal Expressway (S36) on July 8th near St. Georgen, where a large-scale emergency exercise will be conducted in the tunnel section between 17:00 PM and 22:00 PM. Local detours via the secondary road network have been established for both closures, but these are likely to quickly reach their capacity limits during periods of high traffic.
Traffic experts and automobile clubs like the ÖAMTC view the concentration of major events and the start of the holiday season with skepticism regarding the operational capacity of the transport infrastructure. In particular, the ongoing construction zones on main routes, such as the major renovations of bridges on the Tauern and Brenner motorways, drastically reduce lane capacity during the summer months. Critical observers point out that while official recommendations for proactive route planning and maintaining safe distances are sensible, they cannot prevent the structural problem of congestion during peak hours. The inadequate staggering of holiday dates in Central Europe thus regularly leads to an overload of transit routes.
From a logistical perspective, the predicted traffic jams also mean considerable strain for road users, which is why safety authorities advise increased vehicle checks before departure and sufficient rest breaks. Overloaded vehicles, unsecured luggage, and lack of concentration due to fatigue or smartphone use are statistically among the main causes of accidents during the summer months. Whether the existing rest areas along the 2.250-kilometer-long road network are sufficient to meet the need for rest periods during extreme waiting times remains a logistical challenge for infrastructure management during the peak travel season.
