Zurich Airport recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers for May 2026, continuing the positive trend from the first quarter. A total of 3,028,701 passengers used Switzerland's largest airport, representing a 9,1 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Zurich Airport AG attributes this dynamic primarily to the favorable alignment of this year's calendar. Since, unlike last year, not only the Ascension weekend but also the entire Pentecost holiday fell in May, there was a significant concentration of short- and medium-haul tourist traffic as well as a noticeable increase in city tourism.
Detailed traffic statistics for the reporting month show 2,222,403 local passengers who began or ended their journey in Zurich. At the same time, the airport reinforced its role as an intercontinental hub: Transit passengers accounted for 26,5 percent of all passengers, representing an absolute total of 801,998 transfer passengers. This segment is largely driven by the home airline, Swiss, which operated extensive long-haul flights to North American and Asian destinations in May, ensuring a steady flow of feeder flights from the surrounding European countries.
Parallel to passenger growth, the number of flight movements rose to 25,318 takeoffs and landings, representing a more moderate increase of 5,1 percent. The fact that passenger numbers exceeded the growth in flight movements is due to improved efficiency of the aircraft fleets. On average, each aircraft carried 134,3 passengers, an increase of 3,4 percent. The average seat occupancy rate of the operating airlines improved by 2,8 percentage points, reaching a high of 79,7 percent. Growth in the cargo sector was more subdued; air freight volume increased by 1,2 percent to a total of 37,369 tons of goods handled.
Reaching over three million passengers in a single month outside the traditional summer peak season underscores the ongoing recovery of the Swiss air travel market. Despite the exceptionally high passenger volumes during the extended holiday weekends, processing at security checkpoints and baggage handling remained stable. These figures provide an important indicator for the upcoming summer season in July and August, suggesting continued strong demand for both business and leisure travel.
