Travel Vaccinations: Preparation is the key to a carefree vacation

The anticipation of the summer vacation is increasing, but before packing their bags, travelers should think about their vaccination certificate. Experts recommend that you also consider necessary vaccinations when traveling to the Mediterranean region, as risks of illness can also be hidden here.

A visit to your family doctor or travel doctor for a vaccination certificate check and possible vaccinations is recommended, especially for pilgrims planning to go on Hajj. Important to know: Travel vaccinations are usually not covered by health insurance (e.g. Austrian Health Insurance Fund). If you are privately insured or have additional private insurance, it may be worth taking a look at your policy, as many insurance companies reimburse the costs of travel vaccinations.

Standard vaccinations for summer travel

Even if travel destinations such as Greece, Turkey, Spain, Egypt and Italy do not seem exotic, travelers should not forget about standard vaccinations, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Alexander Zoufaly from the Tropical Institute in Vienna. Tropical diseases can also spread in the Mediterranean region, particularly due to climate change, as the example of dengue fever shows.

Protection against hepatitis

Vaccinations against hepatitis A and B are not only important for traveling to distant countries, but also for the Mediterranean region. Infection with hepatitis A can occur through contaminated drinking water or food, while hepatitis B is transmitted through body fluids. Vaccination is therefore strongly recommended to prevent serious liver diseases.

Risk of rabies abroad

Despite the extinction of rabies in Western Europe, the risk still exists in countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. The deadly disease is almost always transmitted through bites from infected animals. Timely vaccination is therefore essential, especially for travelers who do not have access to vaccines abroad.

Hajj pilgrimage: compulsory vaccination against meningococci

Vaccination against meningococci is mandatory for believers who make the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Saudi Arabia requires proof of this vaccination in the international vaccination certificate. Meningococcal diseases can also occur in the EU, so vaccination should be discussed individually.

Early advice for a worry-free holiday

A visit to your family doctor or travel doctor about 10 weeks before the trip is strongly recommended to carry out all necessary vaccinations and discuss risk-minimizing measures. An individual assessment, taking into account the travel circumstances, is crucial for a carefree holiday.
