United Airlines introduces new luxury cabin on the Zurich–San Francisco route

The US airline United Airlines is strengthening its presence in the Swiss market through a significant upgrade of its onboard product. From September 2, 2026, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with the "Elevated Premium" interior, unveiled in May 2025, will be deployed on the seasonal route between Zurich and San Francisco.

This makes Switzerland the first location in the German-speaking world where passengers can experience the new cabin concept. The centerpiece of this configuration is the United Polaris Studio Suites, which represent an evolution of the existing Business Class and offer an increased level of privacy.

The Dreamliner in use boasts an exceptionally high density of premium seats. A total of 99 seats are available in upgraded categories, including eight of the new luxury suites. These suites feature sliding doors, offer approximately 25 percent more space than conventional business class seats, and convert into fully flat beds. Technologically, the airline utilizes modern standards such as 27-inch 4K OLED monitors, wireless charging for mobile devices, and Bluetooth connectivity at every seat. The culinary offerings have also been tailored for this class and include, among other things, an amuse-bouche featuring Ossetra caviar.

The modernization, however, doesn't just affect the premium cabin, but the entire aircraft. Larger overhead bins and new entertainment systems with high-resolution screens have been installed in United Premium Plus and Economy Class. According to industry analysts, this move is part of a comprehensive fleet strategy under which United plans to put at least 30 Boeing 787-9 aircraft into service with the new features by the end of 2027. By increasing seating capacity in the premium segments, the company is responding to the consistently high demand for comfortable long-haul flights between major financial and technology centers.

Daily flight operations with the new cabin configuration are scheduled to continue until October 24, 2026. With this move, United Airlines underscores the strategic importance of Zurich as a key hub for business travelers to North America. The introduction of the Elevated cabin concept follows the initial successful deployments of the retrofitted aircraft on routes from San Francisco to Singapore and London. Experts view the investment in high-quality cabin interiors as a necessary step in the competition with other transatlantic carriers, which are also increasingly focusing on suite concepts in business class.
