Weeze Airport records strong passenger growth in the first half of 2025

Niederrhein Airport, also known as Weeze Airport, looks back on a successful first half of 2025. From January to June, a total of 1.019.945 passengers used the airport, representing a remarkable increase of 18 percent compared to the same period last year. The months of May and June, in particular, proved to be exceptionally strong, with over 229.000 passengers each, bringing the airport new monthly records.

Airport Managing Director Dr. Sebastian Papst expressed optimism about the rest of the year, citing the stable summer flight schedule. Passenger numbers so far, which are around 18 percent higher than the previous year, make him confident that 2025 as a whole could achieve a new record. This positive trend is also supported by the start of the North Rhine-Westphalia summer holidays, for which the airport expects well-booked travel times. A total of 11 passenger flights are planned from July 26 to August 2025, 1.063, with approximately 190.000 passengers expected – an increase of approximately 3 percent compared to the previous year.

As in 2024, classic Mediterranean destinations dominate the list of the most popular travel destinations from Weeze this summer. Palma de Mallorca leads the list with over 100 scheduled flights, followed by Girona with 81 departures and Alicante with 60 flights. Also Malaga and Zadar are among the most frequently served routes from Weeze Airport. In recent years, Weeze Airport has established itself as an important hub for low-cost airlines in the Lower Rhine region, benefiting from its geographical location near the Dutch border and its focus on tourism.

For a relaxed arrival during peak travel season, Weeze Airport recommends that guests arrive at least 2,5 hours before departure. Martin Kellendonk, Deputy Head of Flight Operations and responsible for Terminal Management, pointed out that waiting times at check-in and security checkpoints can be particularly long during peak hours in the morning and afternoon. Furthermore, several major events take place on the airport grounds during the summer holidays, so passengers should also allow sufficient time for their journey. The parking areas were expanded by an additional 1.400 spaces just in time for the summer, ensuring sufficient parking even without advance reservations.
