For several months, the private railway company Westbahn has also been heading to the Bavarian capital Munich. Holders of the Austrian climate ticket are offered the so-called "Climate Plus Ticket" for the German part of the route. This has been made more expensive. The company speaks of a “time-limited promotional tariff”.

This special ticket, which is available between Salzburg and Munich and vice versa, was originally offered at a fixed price of 14,90 euros. Although there are always cheaper promotional tickets, the price of this "extension" for holders of the Austrian climate ticket was usually below the regular prices, taking into account the fact that it is valid in Comfort Class.

From December 11, 2022, the Westbahn will also stop in Rosenheim, Bavaria. Currently, there are no regular stops between Salzburg and Munich East. However, the German federal police often forces trains from Austria to make unscheduled stops at Freilassing station in order to carry out passport checks under the guise of “refugees”. As a result, there are frequent delays in rail traffic between Salzburg and Munich for all providers.

The new stop in Rosenheim also has unpleasant financial consequences for holders of the Austrian climate ticket, because the Westbahn has raised the price for the "Climate Plus Ticket" between Salzburg and Munich vv by five euros to 19,90 euros without further communication. The "old price" of 14,90 euros now applies to/from Rosenheim.

The Westbahn explains in a statement to Aviation.Direct that the future stop in Rosenheim is not related to the price increase. The price for the “Climate Plus Ticket” was not “secretly” increased either. “The tariff of 14,90 euros as a supplement to the KTÖ to Munich was designed from the start as a time-limited promotional tariff. The price adjustment is therefore completely independent of the additional stop in Rosenheim," said a Westbahn spokeswoman.

Holders of the Austrian climate ticket who travel between Salzburg and Munich now have to put ten euros more on the table for the return journey. Alternatively, sometimes cheaper, promotional tickets can also be booked. Without a paid upgrade, however, these do not apply in comfort class, but only in the Standard class.

The price increase on the German route section has no effect on the validity of the climate ticket within Austria. This applies unchanged between Vienna and Salzburg vv and from December 2022 also on the announced new route to Innsbruck.
