The German leisure airline Eurowings is pursuing a dual communication strategy that combines the joy of travel with strong regional ties. With a spectacular special livery of an Airbus A321neo and a large-scale location campaign in Cologne and Düsseldorf, the company aims to consolidate its position as a leading provider of leisure flights while simultaneously emphasizing its roots in North Rhine-Westphalia.
These measures not only serve to promote the attractive vacation packages of the tour operator Eurowings Holidays, but also to strengthen brand identity and customer loyalty. The "world's fastest sunglasses" on the nose of the aircraft and the campaign that combines the Cologne lifestyle with the holiday feeling are expressions of an aggressive market strategy that further fuels competition in the tourism industry.
A flying ambassador with XXL sunglasses
A Eurowings Airbus A321neo has recently been attracting attention. With oversized sunglasses on the nose of the cockpit, the aircraft advertises Eurowings Holidays, the airline's own tour operator, which was spun off as an independent company in spring 2025. The goal is ambitious: Eurowings Holidays aims to become one of the top 10 tour operators. The choice of aircraft type for this striking livery is no coincidence. The Airbus A321neo, with the registration "D-AEEA" and more than 230 seats, is the preferred model for the so-called "Mallorca Shuttle," as it meets the high demand for non-stop flights to Germany's most popular holiday island.
Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, sees the special livery as a fitting expression of the airline's identity as Germany's largest leisure airline. "We fly over 20 million people on vacation every year. So we thought it was only logical to give one of our aircraft a matching vacation look," says Bischof. The sunglasses are not only intended to be visually appealing, but also to symbolize the carefree vacation fun that Eurowings aims to offer its guests. The campaign is part of a comprehensive marketing strategy aimed at connecting the Eurowings brand even more strongly with positive associations surrounding leisure and travel.
Commitment to location: love of home meets wanderlust
In conjunction with the flying sunglasses, Eurowings is launching large-scale campaigns in collaboration with Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf Airports, highlighting the airline's close ties to its home region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Under the motto "Holiday Feeling Meets Love of Home," new advertising motifs will be presented across 880 advertising spaces in Cologne for a month. Slogans such as "Jet in the Sun" and "Kölle Ratjada" combine the Cologne lifestyle with the joy of travel. The motifs feature prominent Cologne landmarks such as the cathedral and the banks of the Rhine, combined with airplanes and holiday atmospheres.
The campaign in Cologne is the third of its kind and builds on the success of previous years. It underscores the partnership between the airline and the airport. Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, stresses the importance of this cooperation: "Eurowings has been our most important partner and the largest airline at the location for many years – and, as a Cologne-based airline, is firmly connected to the city and region." A parallel campaign in Düsseldorf is intended to highlight the airline's ties to this important location. Jens Bischof describes the campaigns as a "clear commitment to the location" and a "truly close matter of the heart." The campaigns demonstrate that the airline's roots lie in North Rhine-Westphalia and that cooperation with the state's two major airports is crucial to the company's success.
A strategic realignment in a competitive market
Eurowings' aggressive marketing efforts are part of a broader business strategy. The spin-off of Eurowings Holidays as a separate company is a clear sign that the group intends to strengthen its position in the package tour business. Tourism industry experts see this as a logical step, as bundling flights and hotels in one package is attractive to many customers and increases the company's added value. With the goal of becoming one of the top 10 tour operators, Eurowings is positioning itself directly in competition with established industry giants.
The German travel market is highly fragmented and fiercely competitive. Germans' desire to travel remains undiminished, reflected in high passenger numbers and strong demand for vacation trips. The latest statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show that air traffic in Germany has picked up again after the years of crisis. Eurowings is benefiting from this development and is seeking to attract new customers and retain existing ones through attractive offers and clear brand communication. Its specialization in vacation travel and its strong presence at Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports are key competitive advantages. Marketing campaigns, which reinforce the airline's image as a friendly and reliable partner for vacations, play a central role in this strategy.
