Wizz Air and Salzburg have a long history together, marked by an extremely short guest appearance in 2020 and many announcements that were ultimately not implemented. It was all the more surprising that Wizz Air then added London (Luton), Bucharest (Otopeni) and Skopje. But that will also end very soon.
In the summer of 2020, Wizz Air surprisingly announced that will connect Salzburg Airport with several destinations. They also wanted to offer Kiev-Zhuliany and St. Petersburg-Pulkovo. For a variety of reasons, such as unfavorable developments in the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine, Wizz Air has repeatedly postponed its comeback, sometimes at extremely short notice. Ultimately, they decided in the reopening of Salzburg Airport other destinations included than “originally” announced. Given the current state of affairs, it has not lasted very long.
As of January 10, 2025, Wizz Air will discontinue the non-stop connection between Bucharest (Otopeni) and Salzburg. The route is currently completely off sale for all subsequent dates, so the likelihood that it could be reactivated in the foreseeable future is rather low. Wizz Air itself does not provide any information about this "flight schedule adjustment".
But that's not all: According to the current information, the destinations London-Luton and Skopje are also to be suspended. Both of the destinations mentioned are not to be offered from the city of Mozart, at least in the 2025 summer flight schedule. Unless Wizz Air offers alternative destinations at short notice or changes its mind regarding the cancellation of the three Salzburg routes, the city of Mozart will once again be left without any flights from the pink low-cost airline.
According to the current state of affairs, the following "cancellation plan" applies: Salzburg will be served for the last time from Bucharest-Otopeni on January 10, 2025. Skopje-Salzburg will be served for the last time on March 28, 2025 and the Luton route will end on March 29, 2029. Apparently, there are plans to reactivate the destinations in North Macedonia and the United Kingdom in the 2025 winter flight schedule. However, official confirmation of this is still pending.
