Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air is further expanding its presence at Cologne/Bonn Airport and has established a new direct connection to the Montenegrin capital Podgorica.
The airline will now operate the new route four times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The addition of this flight route significantly strengthens connections between the Rhineland region and the Balkans. Podgorica is considered an important economic and cultural center of the country and is also a key starting point for the growing tourism industry in Southeast Europe.
The new flight connection to Montenegro is already the sixth Eastern European destination added to the low-cost airline's schedule since its operational return to the Rhenish air hub last autumn. Previously, as part of a strategic realignment, the airline had already reactivated or newly established routes to destinations such as Skopje, Belgrade, and Gdansk. The Cologne/Bonn Airport operator welcomed the expansion, as the segment of direct flights to Eastern Europe experiences consistently high demand, driven in particular by ethnic travel and city breaks.
For its flights to Podgorica, Wizz Air uses modern short- and medium-haul jets from the Airbus A320 family, primarily the larger Airbus A321neo. By basing new aircraft at its Eastern European bases, the airline can optimize its schedules and keep costs per passenger low. While the route competes in the German market with other airlines serving the Balkans from the nearby airports of Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, it offers the Middle Rhine region an exclusive and time-saving direct service without layovers.
The expansion of route networks in the low-cost sector reflects the ongoing consolidation and growth of the European air transport market. Airports like Cologne/Bonn benefit from the flexibility of low-cost carriers to quickly increase capacity in response to demand. Cologne/Bonn Airport management anticipates significant passenger growth in the current fiscal year due to Wizz Air's increased flight frequencies, while the Hungarian airline further solidifies its market leadership in traffic between Central Europe and the Baltic and Balkan states.
