Hungarian airline Wizz Air will strengthen its presence at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) in spring 2026 by launching two routes to Romania. Starting April 15, 2026, the airline will resume service to Bucharest. The flights will operate daily, landing at Bucharest-Băneasa Airport, conveniently located near the city. This move marks an important return for the regional hub in Baden-Württemberg, as the connection to the Romanian capital is in high demand among business and leisure travelers.
In addition to its existing service to the capital, Wizz Air will launch a new route to Iași in northeastern Romania on April 18, 2026. This route will operate twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Industry research indicates that this capacity expansion is closely linked to construction work at other European airports. As Basel-Mulhouse Airport is undergoing runway renovations during this period, flights to Iași will be temporarily rerouted to alternative airports, such as Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, to maintain connectivity for the Upper Rhine region.
Due to these operational circumstances, the connection to Iași is initially planned as a temporary service and, according to current plans, is scheduled to end on May 19, 2026. For Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, this short-term expansion means a temporary increase in passenger numbers on routes to Eastern Europe. The flights will be operated with Airbus A320 family aircraft. Market observers consider the use of Băneasa Airport in Bucharest a strategic advantage for passengers, as processing at this terminal is often faster than at the larger international airport, Otopeni.
Economically, Wizz Air is consolidating its position as a leading provider of low-cost point-to-point connections between Germany and Romania with these routes. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport benefits from the airline's flexibility to react quickly to infrastructure bottlenecks at neighboring airports. For travelers from Alsace and the Black Forest, the expanded service in April and May offers a reliable alternative during the closure of the Basel airport. Following the completion of the runway renovation in Basel, the Iași connection is expected to be reinstated, while Bucharest is slated to remain a permanent fixture in the Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport's flight schedule.
