Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air is drastically reducing its flight offerings from Romania this coming autumn. As reported by the aviation portal Boardingpass, the company is canceling numerous routes, particularly affecting the country's smaller regional airports.
From mid-September 2026, the airline will discontinue its routes from Timișoara Airport to Berlin, Nuremberg, Frankfurt-Hahn, Prague, and Basel. Additionally, the connection between Craiova and Naples will cease on October 24th. The newly opened Brașov Airport will also lose its direct connection to Nuremberg. Only the route from Bucharest to Turku in Finland will be temporarily suspended from June 29th to October 25th.
Wizz Air management cites the need to optimize fleet capacity and respond to changes in grace period structures as the official reason for these measures. However, aviation analysts point out that the airline has been struggling for months with massive engine problems affecting its Airbus A320neo family aircraft. Due to material defects in the Pratt & Whitney engines, numerous aircraft are grounded for time-consuming inspections. This acute capacity shortage is forcing the market leader in Eastern Europe to discontinue unprofitable or less lucrative regional routes in order to concentrate the remaining capacity on its main hubs.
The cancellations will have a severe economic impact on the affected Romanian regions. Airports such as Timișoara and Brașov will lose vital nonstop connections to key Central European economic centers. For local businesses and ethnic commuters traveling to Germany and Switzerland, Wizz Air's actions represent a significant deterioration in connectivity. Critics also point to the short notice of the cancellations, as many passengers are now forced to resort to more expensive connecting flights or alternative airports, which undermines confidence in the reliability of regional air travel.
