Wizz Air is intensifying its presence at Cologne/Bonn Airport and will launch a new direct service to Moldova on May 23, 2026. Flights to the capital, Chișinău, will operate twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Thilo Schmid, CEO of Cologne/Bonn Airport GmbH, sees the launch of this service as confirmation of the successful cooperation, following the airline's return to the airport last autumn. The flight time is approximately two and a half hours, and modern Airbus A321neo aircraft will be used.
Further research into the airline's strategic direction reveals that Wizz Air is specifically positioning Cologne/Bonn as a hub for traffic to Southeast Europe. Following Chișinău, other destinations will be added in quick succession: Starting June 2, 2026, Podgorica in Montenegro will be served four times a week. This complements the airline's existing portfolio, which since the end of 2025 has included the capital cities of Bucharest, Skopje, and Tirana, as well as the Bosnian city of Tuzla. This expansion primarily targets the growing market for ethnic travel and budget-conscious city travelers seeking new destinations beyond the traditional Western tourist centers.
Cologne/Bonn Airport benefits economically from the high frequency of flights and the high occupancy rates of the low-cost carrier, while Moldova is considered an up-and-coming destination for cultural tourism and the wine trade. Chișinău serves as the country's economic center and provides connections to important agricultural and wine regions. The Airbus A320 family aircraft used, particularly the A321neo, are characterized by their high seating capacity, which strengthens competitiveness on these niche routes. Experts point out that the stability of these connections depends significantly on demand from local communities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Wizz Air's fleet strategy focuses on a low average aircraft age of currently 4,7 years, which is intended to increase operational reliability. With the launch of the route to Moldova, the airline is solidifying its position as one of the leading providers of point-to-point connections in Eastern Europe. Tickets for the new routes are already available through the airline's digital channels. For Cologne/Bonn Airport, this expansion means further diversification of the flight schedule and strengthened connections to regions that have previously been underrepresented in scheduled service.
