The Commission for Energy, Transport and Environment has recommended to the Zurich Cantonal Council that the project regarding the intended runway extensions should be approved. Zurich Airport welcomes this.
The runway extensions are an important measure to increase the safety margin at Zurich Airport and to stabilize operations. Thanks to more stable flight operations with better compliance with the specified operating concepts, there are fewer delays and thus more sleep at night. Finally, the runway extensions reduce the number of people affected by aircraft noise. The KEVU follows the Zurich government council, which has already approved the project.
The runway extensions do not lead to an increase in capacity, as there is no connection between runway length and number of flight movements. Airplanes can no longer take off or land on a longer runway. The project does not change the framework conditions applicable to the airport, which the federal government specifies.
