Zurich: Passenger traffic stagnates in May 2025

Advertising

Zurich Airport recorded passenger traffic of 2025 travelers in May 2.775.275. This represents a slight increase of 0,1 percent compared to the same month last year. Although the number of passengers remained almost constant, the number of aircraft movements, i.e., takeoffs and landings, increased by 1 percent to 24.092.

The number of local passengers in May 2025 was 2.002.850. The share of transfer passengers was 28 percent, corresponding to 767.514 travelers. It is striking that the average number of passengers per flight, at 130, was 2 percent lower than the previous year. At the same time, seat utilization fell by 2 percentage points to 77 percent in the reporting month compared to May of the previous year. This suggests that while airlines are offering more flights, these are not fully utilized or that smaller aircraft are being used.

In terms of cargo handling, Zurich Airport recorded a volume of 36.935 tonnes in May. This represents a decrease of 1 percent compared to the same month last year. The development in May 2025 thus presents a mixed picture for Zurich Airport: While passenger volumes remain stable and flight movements increase slightly, flight load factors and cargo volumes are declining. The aviation industry continues to face challenges such as balancing capacity and demand.
