A321XLR: Wizz Air doesn't want to fly across the pond

From 2023 the low-cost airline Wizz Air will receive a total of 20 Airbus A321XLRs. The first units are to be stationed at the Budapest home base. But you don't want to enter the transatlantic business with this pattern.

Looking at the range of the A321XLR, this type of machine would be suitable for flying between Europe and the two American continents. But Wizz Air is not considering that. Chief Commercial Officer George Michalopoulos once again emphasized to Simple Flying that the long-haul pattern should be used to connect the outermost points of the existing route network.

“Our plan is really to connect the dots. There are points we currently serve from our 191 airports where you simply cannot fly direct because we don't have the range of the A321XLR. This is the main purpose for us when buying the XLR ”, the manager told Simple Flying. For example, flights to India could be carried out from Abu Dhabi, but a final decision has not yet been made.

However, passengers on board the A321XLR sub-fleet should not expect any particular level of comfort. The seating will be based on that of the existing fleet. George Michalopoulos emphasizes that the cheapest price counts for the passengers.

    You don't need an XLR for the Abu Dhabi India route. A normal A321neo is sufficient.

    Why was the statement with XLR flights to India accepted so uncritically?

      So much time will pass until 2023 and it can be assumed that a lot will change by then. Since the general motto in aviation is “what interests me about my chatter from yesterday”, you can't really rely on the current statements anyway. So I thought it was unnecessary to question that, because by 2023 we will come up with numerous other explanations. We will then see what Wizzair will really do with the A321XLR. Of course what you write is correct: Between AUH and India you definitely don't need the XLR variant.
