What has been in force on many Italian beaches for several years is now gradually being introduced in Spain: smoking bans on beaches. The city of Barcelona will ban smoking from July 1, 2022. Anyone who does not comply and is caught risks a fine in the beach amount of 30 euros.
The city administration of the Catalan metropolis announced, among other things, that this step was taken not least for environmental reasons. Cigarette butts would pose a significant problem as a cause of microplastics in the sea. We also want better protection for non-smokers.
Barcelona is not an isolated case, as smoking has been banned at many Italian stands for several years. In a direct comparison with Spain, significantly more sensitive fines can be imposed. On the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, in the Basque Country, in Andalusia, Galicia and Valencia there are already first beaches where smoking is prohibited.
