After two and a half years of strict coronavirus restrictions, Japan is now open again to holidaymakers from abroad.
From today, short-term visitors will no longer need to apply for a tourist visa. Apart from the compulsory vaccination - three doses are required - and a test, there are no longer any corona-related entry conditions. In addition, the upper limit of a maximum of 50.000 people entering the country per day is a thing of the past.
Japan had closed its borders at the beginning of the pandemic, and at times not even Japanese citizens were allowed to return home from abroad. Only recently has the country gradually opened up again. The first organized travel groups were allowed to enter the country in June, and since today visa-free entry is again possible for individual travelers from 68 countries and regions. In 2019, before the pandemic began, Japan had a record 31,9 million overseas visitors. In 2021, only 250.000 foreigners traveled to Japan.
