On December 2nd, the airspaces of Albania and North Macedonia were integrated into the "Southeast Europe Common Sky Initiative" - Free Route Airspace (SECSI FRA).

One of the largest common free route airspaces in Europe has grown a little again. With the current expansion, aircraft can now be guided in the "SECSI" Free Route airspace on the shortest possible flight routes from Austria to Albania. With the current expansion, together with the airspaces of Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro, one of the largest cross-border free route airspaces in Europe is being created.

“Austro Control stands for the most climate-friendly air traffic possible, and our approach is very simple: We make sure that you are as little in the air as possible when flying. Austro Control has done pioneering work with the implementation of a cross-border Free Route airspace to Southeast Europe and we are pleased that we can welcome two more participants, Albania and North Macedonia, ”says Austro Control Managing Director Valerie Hackl.

Free route means that aircraft can fly through airspaces in a direct way, without detours, on the shortest route.
