In March 2021, the volume of traffic at German airports will remain far below normal.

The incidence rate, which is rising again in Germany, is further slowing down demand. The Mallorca flights in the second half of March, which were added to the program at short notice, only slightly stimulated the development of air traffic. The figures look accordingly: Only 1.967.779 passengers registered the German airports. That is 72,5 percent less than in March last year, compared to the pre-crisis year 2019, the decrease is even minus 89,7 percent.

In contrast, air freight increased in March by 21,9 percent to 474.106 tons, compared to 2019 it rose by 7,6 percentage points. The Airport Association ADV even expects the considerable growth course to continue in the next few months.

“The reasons for the current dynamic are the high volume of online retail. Changed logistics chains can also be observed. Due to the limited capacities for sea containers, logistics chains are rescheduled for air freight. However, this modal change will only be of a temporary nature, ”said the association's broadcast.
