The lockdown keeps air traffic on the ground. The Airport Association ADV gives an overview of the current situation.
In the course of December 2020, the volume of traffic at German airports fell further: Only 2.033.947 passengers used the German airports - 87,9 percent less than in the previous year. The number of commercial flight movements also fell by -69,2 percent to 47.747 take-offs and landings. The cargo volume, on the other hand, rose by +13,0 percent to 449.226 tons. The tightened lockdown from the middle of December, combined with the political request to refrain from unnecessary travel during the Christmas holidays, put pressure on the already low demand.
Despite the occasional positive booking figures in a few tourist destinations, the industry's weak hopes for a slight recovery in demand during the Christmas holidays were not fulfilled. The flight bans to Great Britain and South Africa also slowed any possible recovery. The airports remained in lockdown even at the turn of the year, far from being economically viable. "The start of the new year will not bring about any changes in trend - the economic situation of the airports, which nevertheless fulfill their traffic function for the provision of general interest, remains critical and tense," it says in the broadcast.
