The Russian airline Aeroflot and all of its subsidiaries are apparently preparing for the fact that it will no longer be possible to fly to the European Union and other countries that have imposed sanctions due to the military attack on Ukraine. All branches, sales and city offices in these countries will be closed.
However, this step is not taken entirely voluntarily, because due to the sanctions, European governments and the USA, among others, no longer want offices of Russian airlines on their sovereign territories. According to Valérie Broquet, who was previously Country Manager for Aeroflot in France, all branches in Europe and the USA will be closed.
The airline alliance Skyteam had previously suspended the carrier's membership. Competitor Oneworld sold its Russian member S7 Airlines. At the moment, Russian airlines only fly to a few countries. Mainly machines from Russian production are used, because in many countries there is a risk of seizure of leased aircraft that are not returned. Interestingly, Aeroflot plans to fly to the Maldives again with Airbus A330 shortly. It remains to be seen whether the plan will actually be implemented and whether it could happen that lessors, with the help of the local judiciary, have planes seized as a kind of bargaining chip.
