The Italian volcanoes Etna and Stromboli have shown increased activity in the last few days. Thick clouds of smoke and lava were seen on Mount Etna, which is located near Catania Airport. Flight operations had to be restricted for safety reasons.

The airspace was closed and some connections were rerouted. For safety reasons, the number of take-offs and landings was also limited. This resulted in delays. In the last few weeks Etna and Stromboli have shown increased activity. In Sicily one is used to this and can handle it well.

The Etna volcano is the world's highest of its kind with a height of about 3.300 meters. It is also a tourist magnet and in winter you can even go skiing there in two resorts. The Stromboli is located on a small island and spits almost permanently on a small scale.
