Because of careless tourists at the most active volcano Europe the community Biancavilla on the Mediterranean island Sicily New safety regulations have been issued. Effective immediately, visitors must maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters from active lava flows.
The ordinance was issued after groups of hikers were in close proximity to the lava in the upper reaches of the volcano. Many tourists attempted to take pictures with their cell phones, putting themselves in danger. At an altitude of approximately 2300 meters, minor explosions are currently occurring repeatedly.
The mayor of Biancavilla, Antonio Bonanno, assured that access to the volcano remains possible. However, excursions are only permitted under strict rules and accompanied by mountain guides or volcanologists. Wearing protective equipment such as helmets is mandatory.
The more than 3300 meter high etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Its activity constantly changes the landscape. There have been repeated dangerous eruptions in the past; the worst historical disaster occurred in 1669, when, according to records, more than 20.000 people died.
