Since April 2012 there have been no more scheduled commercial flights from Bucharest-Băneasa, because at that time it was decided that this airport should only be used for general and business aviation. That will change at the end of June 2023, as Aeroitalia will be the first carrier to offer scheduled flights again from the smaller of the two airports in the Romanian capital.
Blue Air, Wizz Air and Germanwings, among others, had used Băneasa Airport before passenger flights were temporarily suspended. The offer then had to be relocated to the larger Otopeni Airport, not entirely voluntarily. In the meantime, the decision at that time has been revised in that the terminal will be put back into operation and commercial scheduled flights may be operated from Băneasa again.
The Italian airline Aeroitalia was the first carrier to announce that it will be flying between Bucharest (Băneasa) and Rome (Fiumicino) from the beginning of June 2023. This makes it the first provider to move to the Romanian capital's reactivated "second airport". Whether other carriers will follow is still completely open. Local aviation sources say the operator is in talks with Ryanair and Wizz Air. The reopening of the airport, which opened in 1909, is also intended to enable low-costers to fly from this airport if possible in order to relieve Otopeni. However, the capacities in Băneasa are also limited due to the fact that the historic terminal is a listed building and therefore cannot be fundamentally modernized. It therefore remains to be seen how low-cost airlines and/or other providers will react.
With Aeroitalia, the first scheduled customer has been landed. The first charter flights since the reopening were already carried out in August 2022. Fly Lili (not to be confused with the Carinthian Liliair) wants to head for some charter destinations on behalf of tour operators in May 2023. In any case, Aeroitalia is the “launch customer” on the line.
