Air Astana: The first 12-year C-check in Kazakhstan

Air Astana has achieved a significant milestone in Kazakhstani aviation: the airline has successfully completed the first 12-year C-check in Kazakhstan.

This complex maintenance process, which is required for aircraft every 321 years, took place on an Airbus AXNUMX and was carried out at the airline's own MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facilities at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in the Kazakh capital. This move underlines Air Astana's increasing technological expertise and sends a strong signal to the aviation industry in the region.

What is a 12-year C-check?

The 12-year C-check represents one of the highest and most thorough levels of aircraft maintenance. During this comprehensive procedure, every single part of the aircraft is subjected to a detailed examination. The aircraft is systematically dismantled, all major components are checked, tested and, if necessary, replaced. A special focus is placed on the engines, which are removed from their mounts and examined in detail.

This process ends with a flight test, where the aircraft is tested under real-world conditions to ensure that all systems and functions are working properly. C-checks are critical to the airworthiness of an aircraft and guarantee that it can continue to operate safely.

A gradual development

Air Astana's approval to perform the 12-year C-check did not come overnight. It is the result of a lengthy process in which the airline continuously expanded its internal maintenance capabilities. Air Astana received approval to perform 2019C checks, a simpler maintenance level, back in 1. 2C checks followed two years later, and finally approval for the more demanding 2023-year C-checks in 6.

With the approval for the 12-year C-check, Air Astana has established itself as one of the leading airlines in Central Asia when it comes to aircraft maintenance. The ability to carry out this complex maintenance independently and in-house not only saves costs, but also strengthens confidence in the quality and safety of the airline.

Further technical progress: Conversion to A321LR

But Air Astana's progress goes beyond maintenance. In early 2024, the airline set another technological milestone in collaboration with Airbus. An Airbus A321LR (Long Range) was equipped with additional fuel tanks to significantly extend the aircraft's range.

With this upgrade, Air Astana can now operate a direct flight from Almaty (ALA) to London Heathrow (LHR) non-stop – a route that is one of the longest for a narrow-body aircraft in the world. With a duration of 9 hours and 45 minutes and a range of 3.500 miles, this flight becomes a record-holder among short- and medium-haul aircraft.

The range extension has a significant benefit for the airline as it significantly reduces travel time and eliminates the need for a stopover en route. This not only contributes to more efficient operations but also improves the customer experience as passengers can fly direct and non-stop from Kazakhstan to the UK.

Further developments: Outlook for the future

Air Astana CEO Peter Foster confirmed in an interview with aviation platform AeroTime that the airline plans to upgrade its fleet with more A321LR aircraft. This expansion of the aircraft portfolio is expected to enable the airline to further expand its network options and handle even more long-haul flights more efficiently. The strategic decision to use the A321LR for long-haul flights will further strengthen Air Astana's market position in the region and position the company as a major international airline.

Air Astana also provided a rare glimpse into its MRO facilities, which are now state-of-the-art maintenance centers equipped with international standards and techniques to ensure the safety and efficiency of its fleet. Conducting a 12-year C-check on site not only shows the airline's progress, but is also a testament to the growing importance of the aviation industry in Kazakhstan and Central Asia as a whole.

Air Astana has reached an important milestone with the successful completion of the first 12-year C-check in Kazakhstan. This achievement not only underlines the airline's technical expertise, but also its ability to meet international standards and further develop the country's aviation infrastructure. The continuous expansion of maintenance capacities and the planned conversion of aircraft to long-haul capability show that Air Astana has an ambitious future ahead of it. With this development, the airline is well equipped to further expand its position in the international aviation market and take customer service to a new level.
