The Star Alliance member Air Canada will interrupt the non-stop route between Toronto and Vienna again. The background to this is the currently subdued demand in the winter months due to the Omikron variant. However, according to the company, the new “flight break” is not a permanent hiring.
On January 24, 2022, the provisional last round-trip on Toronto-Vienna-Toronto is to be carried out with Boeing 787-8. This route is then paused for at least four weeks. The resumption is currently announced for February 25, 2022 with Boeing 787-9. However, it cannot be completely ruled out that the suspension of the non-stop route between Canada and Austria could be extended. The Canadian airline's comeback was celebrated in July 2021. More on this in this report.
Upon request, Air Canada confirmed that Toronto-Vienna will be on a temporary four-week break. The Star Alliance partner Austrian Airlines will use the Vienna-Montreal route due to lack of demand also temporarily suspend. An AUA spokeswoman confirmed this to Aviation.Direct the previous week. Both Air Canada and Austrian Airlines want to rebook affected passengers to other connections. These are then managed with a change, for example in Frankfurt am Main.
The Canadian government is tightening the entry requirements with effect from January 15, 2022. From this day onwards, only fully vaccinated people should be allowed to enter without exception. The only exceptions that should then still be granted concern young children and people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. The obligation that a negative PCR test, which must not be older than 72 hours, must also be submitted should be retained. Entry must also be registered via the so-called ArriveCAN app.
