With around 1,1 million passengers in 2021, Nuremberg Airport increased its passenger volume by 16 percent compared to the previous year. Before Corona there were more than 4,1 million.
The group closed 2021 with a loss of EUR 14,9 million due to the pandemic. In the first year of the pandemic it was still minus 41,2 million euros. In the reporting year, sales of EUR 42,6 million (previous year: EUR 39,8 million) were achieved at group level, which corresponds to an increase of 7 percent.
Overall, however, the airport now sees itself on the upswing again: "People want to travel," says Hupe. With 251.000 passengers in April alone, Easter travel was good to very good and exceeded expectations. For the summer, Nuremberg Airport is expecting passenger numbers to be similar to those in the pre-pandemic year 2019 for the first time and assumes that it will break the 3 million mark in passenger numbers for the year as a whole.
Freight volumes could be increased
There was a significant increase in air freight flown directly from and to Nuremberg, which even exceeded the pre-crisis level in 2019 (+11 percent). Both regularly operating express services and air freight transported from Nuremberg as additional cargo or by freight charter were able to benefit from this development. There was also a positive trend in air freight (trucking) handled in Nuremberg but not flown from/to Nuremberg (+18 percent).
