On today's national holiday (May 1, 2022), the Austrian Armed Forces are deployed with around 2.800 soldiers and civil servants at home and abroad. Around 1.200 "Bundesheerler" are on duty in the area of corona identity checks at the state borders. Unauthorized border crossings should also be prevented in this way.
The Armed Forces currently have four larger contingents abroad. These are located in Mali, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lebanon and Kosovo. There are also ten small missions in other countries. In Germany, around 1 soldiers are deployed on May 2022, 1.600, the vast majority of them with 1.200 army personnel at the borders and mainly busy with corona controls.
Above all, the assistance services in connection with the Covid 19 pandemic and property protection in Vienna have been required by the army forces for two years now. Whether for contact tracing, health official entry checks or to relieve the police in guarding critical infrastructure in Vienna.
The 105 military properties in Austria are guarded or monitored by their own personnel. These are guards, security services and on-call duty. The remaining 17 less sensitive properties are technically secured or monitored by external companies. To maintain the so-called "duty system" (central office, directorates and military commands), around 40 people are on duty on Sundays and public holidays.
