Some things are simply annoying when flying: Chargeable baggage, the ever-smaller dimensions of hand baggage or the fluid rules. The latter, especially in summer, means that shampoos and shower gels, among other things, have to be thrown into the garbage can at the security check.

In the wake of terrorist attacks, it was introduced across the EU in 2006 that liquids in hand luggage may not have a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters per container. Everything has to be packed in a resealable bag with a maximum capacity of one liter. This regulation is definitely not new, but infrequent flyers in particular, who fly at most once a year on summer vacation, often do not think about it.

Frequent flyers from countries that do not have these rules also occasionally fall into this “garbage can trap” in the European Union. Not only drinks, but also all other types of liquids that contain 100 milliliters (the imprint on the container counts) are not allowed.

With regard to shampoos and shower gels, there is an alternative that is also environmentally friendly. These are called “solid shampoo” or “soap”. The former is quite new on the market in this form and is now available in pretty much every drugstore and various supermarkets. There are numerous manufacturers and even inexpensive retailers' own brands. Basically, it's a conventional shampoo, but the liquid has been removed. This also eliminates the need for preservatives and some chemicals, which makes it interesting from an environmental point of view. There is also no need for a plastic container around it.

It looks like a classic bar of soap. The first question is, of course, how can you properly wash your hair with such a block? It's surprisingly easy, because in the shower you just rub it a little in your hands and you have the right foam with which you can wash your hair. The result is surprisingly good and the bottom line is that it is even cheaper than classic shampoo bottles, because the “blocks” have proven to be extremely productive.

So-called “solid shampoo” is definitely a sensible thing for air travelers, because you don't have to rely on microscopic 100ml containers or the hotel and can take your favorite shampoo with you. After the trip you can use the piece at home or keep it for the next excursion. In any case, you can get by with a piece of “solid shampoo” for a long time and also make a small contribution to the environment. There is also something like this as a shower gel and is called a classic soap.

Finally, a little tip: if you don't want to bother with solid shampoo and fluid rules, there is a simple solution. There are supermarkets and drugstores at the destination or holiday destination, because, surprise surprise, the locals also need such everyday products. As a tourist, you can buy such things at your holiday destination without any problems and you don't have to drag along what feels like half a drugstore.
