American Airlines remains deep red

Advertising

Oneworld member American Airlines is still deep in the red. In the third quarter of 2020, the group posted a loss of $ 2,4 billion. The same period last year showed a profit of 425 million US dollars. If the government does not make more aid, there is a risk of drastic job cuts.

The management of American Airlines and the responsible unions are calling on the Trump administration to resume or extend the support program that expired at the end of September 2020. Otherwise, thousands of employees face dismissal. According to their own information, 20.000 people are on voluntary unpaid leave or have given notice themselves. American Airlines put another 19.000 employees on so-called compulsory leave on October 1, 2020.

In the course of drawing on loans from the state fund, which was filled with 25 billion US dollars, cancellations were excluded until the end of September 2020. This protection for employees has now ceased to exist. Further help is required, as otherwise one can no longer maintain the current workforce. According to American Airlines, the capacity currently on offer is around 59 percent of the previous year.
