Amsterdam: KLM takes action to mitigate chaos

The airline KLM is currently suffering particularly from its own staff shortages, but also from the chaotic conditions that prevail at the Amsterdam-Schiphol home base. Hours of waiting in front of the security check are no longer the exception, but part of everyday life.

In the meantime, the government of the Netherlands has approved the airport's proposal to limit the number of passengers who are allowed to use the airport every day. As a result, some carriers have at least partially relocated their offerings to other airports, such as Rotterdam and Maastricht. Numerous connections were canceled without replacement, so that KLM, for example, also had to contend with additional work for rebooking.

The largest carrier in the Netherlands is now trying to make travel from Amsterdam-Schiphol at least more bearable with the help of a combination of different measures. A short-term improvement in the conditions at this airport is not to be expected due to the acute shortage of staff, only a little relief.

KLM announced that the short-term sale of tickets will be severely restricted. The reason for this is that on European routes, capacity is to be kept free for passengers who have had to wait at the security checkpoint because of cancellations or missed flights. The company also announced that it would like to inform passengers who are affected by canceled connections as early as possible and will offer alternative transportation as soon as possible.

The flights operated by the subsidiary Cityhopper will temporarily no longer carry freight. This is intended to reduce the amount of work and pressure on the ground staff. In some cases in the last few weeks there were no loaders at all available for the cargo goods and one or the other flight was delayed.

In the future, loose goods such as parcels and postal bags will not be transported on long-distance connections. The general cargo is to be stowed in containers that are delivered via the apron. This should speed up the loading and unloading of the aircraft. Air freight-related measures will remain in place until the end of the summer flight schedule (October 29, 2022).

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has now lined up pavilion tents in front of the terminal. These are intended to offer passengers who are waiting for the security check protection from the weather and the sun. However, the management has misjudged the length, because the queue is sometimes significantly longer. A video documenting the enormous waiting time is currently causing a stir on social media.
