On Saturday, so-called climate protectors, who are said to belong to the organizations Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion, gained unauthorized access to the apron of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Several private jets, including ambulance aircraft, were blocked there.
The fact that the activists were able to gain access to the apron on bicycles does not exactly speak for good security at the largest airport in the Netherlands. There are different statements about the exact number of participants. About 500 people are said to have broken through a fence in a parking lot and then initially walked and cycled to business jets and ambulance aircraft unmolested.
Some also chained or glued themselves to the planes. The police were initially cautious, but then took action. According to official information, about 100 people were provisionally arrested. At the same time, a demonstration also took place in the terminal building. This was primarily directed against aircraft noise and is said to have been supported by residents.
Those self-proclaimed climate protectors who blocked private jets on the apron are said to have shown considerable resistance to the executive branch. The police explained, among other things, that special forces had to be deployed in order to be able to literally “drag away” them. The arrests mentioned are said to have taken place in this context.
The organization Greenpeace says that about two dozen activists are said to have blocked a parked private jet on the apron. Call for fewer flights and in particular the ban on short-haul flights and private jets. At the same time, Greenpeace wants to achieve the expansion of rail transport. However, not a single word was said about the fact that access to the apron had been gained illegally.
