An analysis carried out by the travel portal Skyscanner shows that the ticket price is the main decision criterion when booking flights again this year. According to this, more than half of the respondents from Germany are said to have stated that the costs are the main factor when traveling abroad.

Notably, another trend is being heard from airlines like Condor. The company is experiencing particularly high demand in business class this year. This is significantly higher than the demand that existed before the corona pandemic. Many travelers apparently appreciate that the next seat remains free on short and medium-haul routes or that better seats are available on longer flights. However, in this context it must be made clear that economy class is a mass business and the capacity of business class is significantly smaller.

Skyscanner's analysis also revealed that more and more potential holidaymakers are comparing prices. Both online options and obtaining offers from various stationary sales outlets are used.

“The Germans’ passion for travel is unbroken. We see that the majority of Germans (61 percent) attach more importance to travel than before the pandemic. 49 percent of respondents plan to spend more money this year. The main reasons for this are longer journeys (for 44 percent) and more expensive travel destinations (for 43 percent). One explanation for this may be the compensation for lost travel time and canceled vacations from the past two years," said Naomi Hahn, vice president of strategy at Skyscanner. “Price has always been a key factor when choosing a travel destination. Summer vacation is just around the corner and more and more people will soon be taking a flight. A cheap offer is therefore of great importance for many holidaymakers. We observe that providers support travelers with competitive prices. As demand begins to match supply, it's important to know how travelers can get the best price. Whether departing a day or two early, taking the train to an alternative airport nearby, or exploring an alternative destination, changes like these can reduce travel costs.”

Tips for booking cheap tickets

Naomi Hahn, Skyscanner's vice president of strategy, shares four tips to help travelers find the best airfare deals:

Price observation: “Searching for multiple dates and airports gives travelers the best chance of finding a bargain. Anyone who sets up a price alert will be the first to know when prices fall or there are additional offers or discounts. Travelers simply mark the flight they are interested in and Skyscanner will email them if the price goes up or down.”

New Destinations: “In 2020 and 2021, lesser-known destinations away from the usual destinations became more and more popular, not least because of changed entry conditions. For example, if you swap the popular coastal regions on the Mediterranean for less well-known travel destinations, you often get a real bargain and discover new places at the same time.”

Mix & Match: “A smart option is to combine flights from different airlines. Those who do not book flights as a package of return flights, but fly there and back with one airline, can often save in this way. Bookers can easily find the best prices using Skyscanner’s “cheapest month” search.”

Flexible travel period: “Flight prices are based on supply and demand. Because some dates are more popular than others, prices vary. With Skyscanner's all-month search feature, travelers can see cheap flights at a glance and choose the deal that's right for them. If you are considering traveling a day before or a day after your originally planned date, you can often find cheaper flights. Because on less popular days of the week, these are always cheaper.”
