AstraZeneca vaccinations put FAA pilot licenses at risk

The US aviation authority FAA has provisionally created facts in the matter of the controversially discussed vaccine from AstraZeneca: Airmen who are vaccinated with this vaccine or other substances risk losing the FAA medical and thus the flight permit.

However, the vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are recognized. AstraZeneca's vaccine is not recognized by the US FAA. Vaccination with this vector vaccine can lead to the loss of the FAA medical and thus endanger the pilot's license.

In Europe, many private pilots are affected, because many have a US license and are therefore subject to the supervision of the FAA. Due to the complicated vaccine situation in Europe, there is no choice in most countries. Therefore, pilots with an FAA license and medical should keep themselves informed in good time which vaccines are recognized by the authorities.

Regardless of this, it is stipulated that no aircraft may be piloted for 48 hours after a Covid vaccination. The pilots concerned can obtain more information on this subject directly from the FAA, which has extensive information material on hand.

Dear authors of the above message,

can you cite a source for this report? As the FAA AME, I tried to investigate and investigate the facts by calling the FAA's AME hotline. The state of affairs that was given to me there is that there are no regulations at all for vaccines that are not approved in the USA, because their clear rules only apply to the vaccines you have named and approved in the USA by EUA.
So there is no regulation, therefore no basis to assume that the “flight authorization” (what does this mean, the medical? And if so, which class and for what period of time, “permanently and for all classes”? Hard to imagine, at the FAA this is much less common than at EASA ...
As an AME, I don't see why I should refuse to give an AZ vaccinated person his medical service after at least 48 hours, but I am very happy to be instructed if you have other and better information. In any case, one looks in vain for the “extensive information material” on the FAA website,

    Thank you for an answer,

    Dr. Jan U. Bull
