The Mediterranean island is currently the only region in Italy to be graded white on the local Corona traffic light. This is the lowest risk level known to the southern European country. The regional government now wants to restrict access to the island.
As a result, only people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or who have a negative test certificate, which must not be older than 48 hours, are allowed to enter Sardinia. This applies not only to international travelers, but also to people arriving from mainland Italy, for example.
The president of the regional government, Christian Solinas, wants to make the Mediterranean island a model example for all of Europe. He also wants to use the measure to prevent new infections from being brought in from the mainland. The controls are to be carried out in the ports and airports.
It remains to be seen whether this measure will hold. In the previous year, Sardinia wanted to introduce mandatory testing for travelers - including those coming from within the country. At the request of the central government a court overturned the ordinance. At that time the decision was justified by the fact that there was no need for the PCR test requirement and that this would restrict the constitutional freedom of travel.
