Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt am Main, achieved the best traffic performance since the beginning of the corona pandemic in August 2021. Fraport AG announced that around 3,4 million passengers had been counted.
In direct comparison with August 2020, this corresponds to an increase of 123 percent. However, it is 51 percent below the value that was achieved in August 2019. In the freight sector, the year-on-year increase was 13 percent to 178.223 tons.
The listed airport operator attributes the “high” particularly to the increased demand in the summer vacation sector. It is therefore also clear that the most recent value cannot be maintained in autumn and winter with a high degree of probability. CEO Stefan Schulte expects around 20 to 25 million travelers in the full year 2021.
In 2019, Frankfurt am Main achieved an all-time record with around 70 million passengers. We are still a long way from this this year. In the previous year, Germany's largest airport had around 19 million travelers. It should be noted that the months of January and February 2020 and the first two weeks of March were largely unaffected by the pandemic. That was not the case this winter.
