Through the Lufthansa subsidiary Compensaid, Austrian Airlines passengers can now purchase sustainable fuel to compensate for carbon dioxide emissions during the booking process. This should reduce emissions by around 80 percent.

In the past, this “indulgence trade” was used very sparingly. CEO Carsten Spohr said some time ago that he could personally greet Compensaid users with a handshake. It was also repeatedly heard from other airlines that the voluntary offsetting of carbon dioxide emissions is only used by very few passengers.

“The future of climate-neutral flying lies in sustainable fuel. We have been emphasizing this for a long time. Electromobility, for example, will not be an option for aviation for a long time, as the necessary batteries would be too heavy to get an airplane into the air, ”says Austrian Airlines CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. "I am therefore very pleased that with Compensaid we are now giving our passengers the opportunity to make their individual journey climate-friendly by using sustainable fuel."

"We use the Compensaid digital platform to make compensation simple and to integrate it seamlessly into the customer experience," says Christine Wang, Managing Director of the Lufthansa Innovation Hub. "We are very pleased that we have now also been able to win Austrian Airlines for the offer."

Sustainable fuel is currently three to five times more expensive than conventional kerosene. This keeps demand low and production costs high. It is therefore essential to enable more efficient production and thus lower prices in the long term through increased demand.
