NSPA orders another Airbus A330MRTT

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has ordered another Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), bringing the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) to ten aircraft. This announcement follows Belgium's decision to increase its number of flight hours in the programme with an additional 1.100 flight hours per year. The Multinational Multi Role Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF) provides strategic transport, aerial refuelling and medical evacuation capabilities to the six participating nations: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway. These nations signed a memorandum of understanding that allows them to share the costs pro rata according to their national commitment of flight hours per year. "Since the delivery of the first aircraft in 2020, and especially since the start of the war in Ukraine, the MMF has been protecting European sovereignty and demonstrating its capabilities as a multi-role tanker aircraft," said Jean Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space. "With this new order, NSPA has already acquired one of four optional MRTTs requested in addition to the nine aircraft previously ordered, underlining the high level of customer satisfaction."

April 2023: Eindhoven expects 590.000 passengers

The Dutch airport Eindhoven, which is heavily used by Ryanair, Wizz Air and other low-cost airlines, expects to have around 2023 passengers in April 590.000. Around 3.600 flight movements have been registered. In April this year, the number of flight movements and passengers is higher than last year (2022: 3332 flight movements and 540.000 passengers). The reason for this is the after-effect of Corona, which led to fewer flight tickets being sold. In the last week of April and the first week of May (May holidays), the airport expects around 430 departing flights per week (around 61 per day). In the month of July (summer holidays), this number rises to around 440 departures per week (around 63 per day). The busiest days are Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

Austria: APF won 1.603.428 euros for passengers

In 2022, the Agency for Passenger Rights was able to obtain a total of EUR 1.603.428 in compensation and reimbursements for travelers in its arbitration proceedings. The largest share, EUR 1,5 million, came from the aviation sector, followed by the rail sector with EUR 114.600 and the bus sector with EUR 3.300. On average, this means a payment of EUR 448 for passengers per completed APF procedure. "In view of the increased volume of travel in 2022, an increase in irregularities was unfortunately also to be expected," says Maria-Theresia Röhsler, head of the APF. "A large part of the amount generated for travelers comes from proceedings relating to short-term flight cancellations. In the rail sector, we have never had as many inquiries and arbitration proceedings as last year. I am particularly pleased that we were able to resolve the vast majority of these proceedings unbureaucratically, out of court, quickly and absolutely free of charge for passengers. The increased number of applications clearly shows the importance of the APF in the Austrian arbitration landscape." "The desire to travel was great in 2022 and some airlines and airports in particular were required - and sometimes overwhelmed - to get travelers to their destination. Flying became more (time-)consuming overall. But in the rail sector too, demand sometimes exceeded the capacity of the trains on offer on some particularly busy travel days. All of this brought the APF increased inflow. It is gratifying to see that the success rate was again high and that the APF experts were able to bring about an agreement between the parties in the vast majority of arbitration cases," said Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). The vast majority concerned aviation Most of the proceedings were in

Swiss is looking for first officers with previous experience

Contrary to previous practice, the Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss will also hire first officers who already have full pilot training in the coming years. The company is interested in people with and without a valid type rating. For various reasons, Swiss paused pilot training during the corona pandemic. This also has negative effects, because there are too few young pilots from the group's own training center. In order to be able to meet the need for additional pilots, the company is now also taking on first officers with previous experience. "We are delighted to soon be able to welcome experienced co-pilots. The training of new pilots takes around two years. In order to ensure stable flight operations in the medium term, we are dependent on hiring already trained first officers," says Stefan-Kenan Scheib, Head of Flight. In addition to an impeccable reputation and an honest, mature and loyal personality with social skills and leadership potential, various criteria must be met to work as a pilot at Swiss. The requirements can be found on the carrier's homepage. Experienced applicants with a valid Airbus Type Rating will be given priority. First Officers who are positively assessed will receive a permanent employment contract and training will take place at Lufthansa Aviation Training in Glattbrugg.

Hamburg: Air India has taken delivery of the first Airbus A321neo

The airline Air India took delivery of the first Airbus A321neo at the end of last week. The aircraft has already been transferred from Hamburg (Finkenwerder) to Delhi, but has not yet been put into active scheduled service. The Indian carrier recently caused a stir with large orders placed with Airbus and Boeing. The new majority owner Tata Sons wants to renew the fleet, which is considered to be getting on in years, as quickly as possible. Demand is expected to rise sharply on the subcontinent in the coming years. The first Airbus A321neo was finally assembled in Hamburg and officially taken over by Air India on March 25, 2023. The medium-haul jet bears the Indian registration VT-RTD and is due to go into scheduled service shortly. It is the first of an initial eight aircraft of this type to be purchased through a lessor. A large order placed directly with the European aircraft manufacturer includes, among other things, 70 Airbus A321neos.

Hong Kong: Cathay Pacific wants to fleet 50 Airbus A320neo

The airline Cathay Pacific is currently in talks with lessors to be able to add up to fifty Airbus A320neos to its fleet. The aim is to obtain the coveted aircraft more quickly, as the delivery slots at the European aircraft manufacturer are booked up for years. Specifically, according to a report by Bloomberg, Cathay Pacific does not want to lease the aircraft, but rather buy them from the lessors. Direct orders from Airbus would be preferred, but deliveries would have to be waited until the end of this decade. That would take too long for the Hong Kong-based company, as demand has increased sharply since the borders opened. The 50 aircraft are to be used by both the mainline and its subsidiary HK Express. The company declined to comment on Bloomberg's reporting and merely pointed out that it is in regular contact with lessors and aircraft manufacturers. Up to now, the aircraft flying for Cathay Pacific have generally been purchased. The subsidiary HK Express, on the other hand, flies mainly with leased aircraft. The mainline fleet currently consists of 191 aircraft, most of which are widebodies. Only 16 units belong to the narrow-body aircraft category.

Nuremberg satisfied with hub connection to Heathrow

There has been a non-stop connection between Nuremberg and London Heathrow for just over a year. The Bavarian airport considers this to be particularly important because it has been able to attract many transfer passengers for flights to the USA. "The connection from British Airways to the London Heathrow hub was a long-awaited wish of passengers and companies from our metropolitan region," says Dr. Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Nuremberg Airport. "The connection not only brings business travelers, schoolchildren, students and tourists to London, but also to many destinations worldwide via the hub." In addition to domestic British transfer connections to Edinburgh, Manchester or Glasgow, for example, New York Airport is at the top of the list of transfer destinations. Followed by Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami and Boston. The route is also popular in the opposite direction, as the recently published 2022 annual report of the Nuremberg Congress and Tourism Center (CTZ) shows: According to this, the US market developed excellently and remains Nuremberg's most important foreign market with over 120.000 overnight stays, to which the new British Airways connection in particular contributes.
