Jetblue and Spirit call off Fusion

For the second time, a planned merger by Spirit Airlines with another airline has failed, as Jetblue has announced that it will no longer pursue the plan. The merger agreement, which was signed in July 2022, will be terminated by mutual consent. Originally, the management of Spirit Airlines planned to merge with competitor Frontier. They had actually already reached an agreement with Frontier, but then Jetblue Airways made an offer and Spirit shareholders blocked Frontier's plan and gave preference to Jetblue. Thus, the merger with Frontier failed. The US competition authority had concerns about the merger of Spirit and Jetblue from the outset. The authority prohibited the deal and a district court also confirmed the office's legal opinion. The two low-cost airlines initially appealed against this. However, the appeal hearing was not scheduled to take place until June 2024. This is now likely to be obsolete, as Spirit and Jetblue announced in separate media releases on March 4, 2024 that they had decided that the merger agreement, which will be signed in July 2022, would be terminated by mutual consent. In concrete terms, this means that this merger plan has also failed and the two carriers will continue to go their separate ways. Recently, rumors arose that Spirit Airlines' financial situation is strained. Management has vigorously refuted this and made it clear that it is also able to continue flying standalone. It is not yet clear whether Spirit Airlines will now look for a merger partner for the third time. At least for the time being, it will continue to fly alone. Both companies regret in media statements,

Edelweiss names HB-JLP “Elm”

The Swiss holiday airline Edelweiss Air has had the Airbus A320 with the registration HB-JLP named "Elm" by the athlete Vreni Schneider. It is unit number 14 in the fleet of the Swiss sister company. "I am extremely pleased that with the Elm holiday region we have found another sponsor region in Switzerland where the rare edelweiss actually blooms. We are particularly pleased that we have also found a godmother in Vreni Schneider, who is still a role model for many athletes far beyond our national borders," says Markus Gander. In general, the Glarus region seems to have a good breeding ground for the edelweiss. After Braunwald, Elm is the second Airbus A320 to bear a name from this canton.

Verdi calls on Lufthansa ground staff to go on strike again

The Verdi union is calling on Lufthansa ground staff to go on strike again on March 7 and 8, 2024. This is also justified by the fact that the work stoppages held at Lufthansa Cargo and Lufthansa Technik the previous week did not lead to a significantly improved offer. Lufthansa passengers must expect that there could be significant restrictions on flight operations again on Thursday and Friday. The next negotiations are scheduled to take place on March 13 and 14, 2024. Verdi wants to increase the pressure on the employer beforehand.

Galapagos Islands double tourist tax to $200

The government of the Galapagos Islands has announced that from August 2024 the so-called national park fee will be doubled from 100 to 200 US dollars. According to the government, this is the first time in 26 years that the price has been increased. The measure is also being taken because the number of tourists has increased massively and the aim is to use the fee to curb the environmental impact of mass tourism. From August 12, people aged 2024 and over will have to pay 200 US dollars per arrival on the Galapagos Islands immediately after arrival. Up until now, 100 US dollars have to be paid.

Etihad owners are considering listing the state-owned carrier

The state airline of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways, could soon go public. If the plan is actually implemented, it would be the first Gulf carrier to have its shares listed on a marketplace. Etihad Airways is currently fully owned by the state holding company ADQ. According to local media reports, the company intends to take the carrier public. The project already appears to be well advanced, as Bloomberg News, for example, reports, citing company sources, that the IPO is to take place this year. Various options are currently being discussed. The airline began flight operations on November 5, 2003. Previously, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi had a stake in Gulf Air. This carrier was originally a joint carrier of Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Oman. The latter state withdrew in the early 1990s in favor of the newly founded Oman Air. In 2005, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi said goodbye because it had launched its own airline, Etihad, and in 2007 Qatar also pulled out. Gulf Air is now "only" the national airline of Bahrain. Until October 2022, Etihad Airways was directly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. After that, the stake was transferred to the state holding company ADQ. If the IPO actually goes ahead, it would be tantamount to a partial privatization and thus a paradigm shift. Previously, it was considered completely out of the question that the Abu Dhabi management would want private co-owners. But this is not the only stock market project in this region, because Saudi Arabia is preparing the

Stuttgart: Skytanking puts the first electric tank truck into operation

Stuttgart Airport has been investing in electric apron vehicles for several years now. For example, the apron bus fleet has already been completely converted. Now the local oil company Skytanking has put the first electric tanker into operation. It is said to be the world's first example of its size class to be powered by an electric motor. The tank holds up to 40 cubic meters of kerosene. According to a statement from Stuttgart Airport, it is now possible for all operations on the apron to be carried out using electric vehicles. For this reason, the company sees itself as a "pioneer in e-mobility". The new electric tanker weighs 52 tons and holds 40.000 liters of kerosene. It was developed by the body manufacturer Esterer together with Daimler Truck with the aim of being able to supply a wide range of aircraft with fuel. It was implemented as part of the airport's "finalize!" research project together with the University of Aachen and Skytanking. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK). "With the finalize! project, we are reaching another important milestone on the way to emission-free apron traffic. We will not rest on our laurels, but will continue to consistently reduce the emissions of our operations," says Ulrich Heppe, spokesman for the management of Stuttgart Airport GmbH. By 2030, all aircraft handling at Stuttgart Airport is to be climate-neutral. Between 2009 and 2022, CO2 emissions from handling traffic at STR were reduced by 83 percent, primarily through the use of electric vehicles and the switch to stationary ground power. In the long term, even heavy special vehicles, such as those used by the airport fire service, are to be
