Shortage of staff: Four hours waiting time at passport control at Brussels Airport

This affected travelers who wanted to leave the Schengen area or who had arrived outside of this region. Some passengers vented their displeasure on social media, as at times the waiting time was over four hours. Numerous departing passengers are said to have missed their flights because of this. However, they are likely to have very poor prospects of compensation, as the European Court of Justice ruled some time ago that sovereign identity checks are not the responsibility of airlines and travelers must expect that there may be waiting times here. People who arrived in Belgium from non-Schengen destinations or who changed to Schengen flights here were also affected by long waiting times. On social media, it can be read that people sometimes had to wait three hours or more in front of the supposedly only open counter. Brussels Airport points out in a statement that it has no influence on the passport controls carried out by the police. They are happy with what happened, but on
