Fraport AG ends its involvement in Russia: sale of stake in Pulkovo Airport

Fraport AG, one of the leading companies in international airport management, is close to completing the sale of its stake in Pulkovo Airport (LED) in St. Petersburg. After more than 14 years, this marks the end of the Frankfurt-based company's involvement in Russia. The signing of a share purchase and transfer agreement and the registration of the change of ownership in the Russian commercial register mark the end of this era. Fraport's involvement began in 2010 with a concession for the operation and development of Pulkovo Airport. This contract, which has a term of 30 years, was an important step towards the company's internationalization and part of a strategic expansion into emerging markets. However, geopolitical developments in recent years, and in particular Russia's war against Ukraine, led to a drastic reassessment of the Russian business. After the war began in 2022, Fraport ceased all operational activities in St. Petersburg and wrote off the investment entirely in the second quarter of 2022. Nevertheless, the search for a buyer took longer than hoped. CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte explained: “Our goal was always to find a solution that is in the best interests of our shareholders. We have achieved this with the sale.” The buyer and financial aspects of the transaction Fraport is selling its 25 percent stake in VVSS Holding LLC, the operating company of Pulkovo Airport, to Orbit Aviation LLC. This investor from the Middle East was selected as part of a structured transaction process. All necessary approvals have been successfully obtained. The transaction is expected to have a positive effect in the mid double-digit million euro range on Fraport's net financial debt.

Sofia Airport: The arduous path to becoming a five-star regional hub

Sofia Airport is not currently known as a luxury airport. But that is exactly what it wants to be, because the team around airport manager Jesús Caballero Pinto has set itself the goal of becoming a so-called five-star airport. There is still a long way to go and those responsible will have to make a lot of effort. There are currently two terminals in operation in Sofia. T1 has been in operation since 1935 and set new standards for the time when it opened. It has been gradually expanded and is currently mainly used by low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and Easyjet. Competitor Ryanair flies from Terminal 2. T1 is to be taken offline in the medium term and used for other purposes, for example as a VIP departure hall. The fact that T1 is a little out of date despite constant modernization is also shown by the fact that the structural separation of the arrival and departure zones, which was previously common in Eastern Europe, is still in place. There are even separate entrances for these. Terminal 2 to be renovated, T3 to be rebuilt Most airlines use Terminal 2 in Sofia. This was opened in its current form in 2006, but the ravages of time are now gnawing at this building complex. Of course, it is visually much more modern than the core of T1, but it is still a long way from being a five-star airport. This is set to change with the opening of the planned Terminal 3, as company boss Jesús Caballero Pinto announced at the Aviation Event that took place in Sofia last week that a comprehensive

Aspire Sofia: The lounge where smoking is allowed

Sofia, the Bulgarian capital airport, has set itself the goal of becoming a five-star airport. One of the ways to achieve this is by building the planned Terminal 3. There is currently a business lounge in Terminal 2. Does this already come close to the five-star goal or is there still a lot of room for improvement? Terminals 1 and 2 are currently in operation at Sofia Airport. The vast majority of airlines use T2, but low-cost airline Wizzair, for example, flies from T1. There is an Aspire lounge operated by Swissport in T2. There are no special conditions for access, as any passenger can use this facility for a fee of 30 euros. Business class passengers of certain airlines and holders of status cards from some carriers have free access. Lounge cards such as Priority Pass and Dragon Pass are also accepted. This is currently the only lounge waiting for passengers in Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport. There are therefore no alternatives and no further facilities of this kind are expected to be put into operation until the planned third departure hall is commissioned. The entrance to the Aspire Lounge is on the right hand side on the ground floor after the security check. The facility is accessed via stairs, escalator and elevator and is signposted. It is not difficult to find on site, as the entrance area is quite strikingly designed. It is precisely this design that creates high expectations. To put it bluntly: Unfortunately not, these cannot really be fulfilled and there are various reasons for this. After completing the check-in formalities, visitors can

Record overnight stays in summer 2024 despite economic challenges

In the summer half of 2024, Austria's accommodation establishments reached a new record with 81,59 million overnight stays, as Statistics Austria reports. This figure is 0,8% higher than the previous year and reflects the country's attractiveness as a travel destination. However, industry representative Hans Spreitzhofer warns against excessive optimism: rising operating costs and inflation are putting a strain on the economic situation of the establishments. Investments in quality and service remain essential, while the industry is calling for political relief measures.
