Laos opens airspace to Russian planes

The prevailing sanctions imposed by the West against the Russian Federation also resulted in the closure of the respective airspace. However, Laos has been opening its airspace to Russian aircraft since March 10, 2023. Following Putin's order for Russia to launch a war of aggression against Ukraine, sanctions were announced by some countries. Among them was the closure of the respective airspace to Russian aircraft. Due to this sanction, Russian aircraft have no authority to fly in the airspace of the EU, the USA and many other countries. One of the exceptions is the Southeast Asian country of Laos, which did not immediately comply with these sanctions and did not initially announce any such countermeasures. Despite the war, Russian airlines such as Aeroflot were allowed to fly in this airspace until Laos complied with the Western sanctions in December. Following the Western example, Laos finally closed its airspace in December and banned Russian aircraft from its territory. Three months after the announcement of these sanctions, this ban was lifted and the Russian airline is allowed to enter Laos' airspace without penalty, as it did last year despite existing sanctions from other states.
