Lufthansa Group remains the largest provider at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

The Lufthansa Group has maintained its position as the largest provider at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in 2024. Around 30 percent of all connections to and from the capital airport were operated by the Group's airlines - including Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and SunExpress. With a total of 6,4 million passengers carried last year, the Lufthansa Group remains the clear market leader at BER. The second largest provider recorded a share of around 17 percent of flights. On average, one of the Group's aircraft took off from BER every 15 minutes, and the company's six airlines offered up to 500 direct flights to almost 60 destinations every week. Eurowings in particular contributed to this figure by connecting the airport with around 45 destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Gulf region. Passengers can reach more than 290 destinations worldwide via the Lufthansa Group's hubs. For 2025, the Lufthansa Group plans to further expand its presence at BER, while other airlines reduce their offerings. For example, Swiss has started a daily non-stop connection to Geneva since October and Eurowings will increase its seat capacity by 12 percent. In addition, new holiday destinations such as Bilbao, Corfu, Faro and Newcastle have been added to the program.

Nouvelair expands flight connections to Frankfurt and Munich in summer 2025

The Tunisian airline Nouvelair has announced that it will significantly expand its flight connections to Frankfurt and Munich in the upcoming 2025 summer flight schedule. From March 30, 2025, Nouvelair will increase its connection from Tunis to Frankfurt from three to four flights per week. In addition, the airline will increase the frequency of flights to Munich from two to three flights per week during the summer period from June 22 to September 14, 2025. These adjustments are intended to meet the increased demand for connections between Tunisia and Germany and to further increase the attractiveness of the flight offer for travelers. The adjustments to Nouvelair's 2025 summer flight schedule not only reflect the increasing demand for direct flights between Tunisia and Germany, but also the steady expansion of the airline's international route network. Since its founding, Nouvelair has continuously expanded its offering and tried to compete with other European airlines on the popular medium-haul routes between Europe and North Africa. In particular, the demand for connections from Tunisia to Germany has grown in recent years, which is mainly due to the close ties between the two countries in the field of tourism and the strong Tunisian diaspora in Germany. As the largest international hub in Germany, Frankfurt Airport is an important point of contact for international flights, especially for travelers from Europe and North Africa. Therefore, the increase in flight frequencies to Frankfurt from three to four weekly flights is a direct response to the increased demand for direct flights between Tunis and the Rhine-Main area. The new connection will be of interest to both tourists and business travelers.

OMV and Airbus enter into partnership to promote sustainable aviation fuel

OMV and Airbus have signed a letter of intent to work together on the decarbonization of aviation. The focus of the partnership is the promotion of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which cause on average 80 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions over their life cycle than conventional kerosene. The cooperation, which runs from 2025 to 2030, aims to accelerate the production and use of SAF and promote investments in new plants. A focus is on motivating customers to switch to SAF, increasing demand and developing efficient approval and production processes. Both companies see this as an opportunity to fundamentally change aviation. OMV already produces SAF at the Schwechat refinery and has signed long-term supply agreements for 1,5 million tons of SAF until 2030. Airbus plans to use the partnership to advance the global use of SAF in aviation. Martijn von Koten, member of the Executive Board at OMV, and Julie Kitcher, Head of Sustainability at Airbus, emphasized in statements the importance of cross-industry cooperation for the success of such projects. The collaboration is intended not only to advance technological innovations, but also to accelerate the decarbonization of the industry. With the partnership, the two companies want to send a strong signal for the future of aviation and at the same time strengthen their role in the development of sustainable solutions.

Wizz Air resumes flights to Tel Aviv – travel options for British tourists increase

On 15 January 2024, Wizz Air resumed its scheduled service from London Luton to Tel Aviv, marking another step towards normalising travel for British tourists. The resumption of service comes at a time when Israel is attracting large numbers of travellers with attractive events such as the Dead Sea Marathon and Tel Aviv Marathon in February and Tel Aviv PRIDE in June. In addition, the popular Passover and Easter holidays in April are another reason to visit Israel during this period. In addition to Wizz Air, EasyJet flights will also resume from March and British Airways flights from early April. In addition, Virgin Atlantic is currently accepting bookings, which will be handled through a code-sharing partnership with El-Al. These developments offer UK travellers a wider choice of flights and prices compared to last year, when travel options were severely limited. In 2024, a total of 79.000 UK tourists travelled to Israel, accounting for 42 per cent of 2023's visitor numbers. Particularly striking is the increase in the number of British tourists in December 2024, with 6.500 visitors, an increase of 63 percent compared to December of the previous year. This is despite continued restrictive travel advice from the British government and limited flight availability. Israel hopes that tourism will continue to recover in 2025, as more travelers can now count on the normalization of travel conditions with more confidence in their travel planning.

Boeing probably delivers last 777-300ER – successor delayed

In December 2024, Boeing may have delivered the last 777-300ER, according to reports from The Air Current. The aircraft, originally intended for China Southern Airlines, made its maiden flight on January 21, 2020. That was also the day the first positive corona case was reported in the United States, leading to a difficult production environment for Boeing. A year after the first flight, Boeing stopped production of the model. The aircraft was originally scheduled to be delivered to China Southern Airlines, but it instead went to lessor Altavair, which handed it over to Ethiopian Airlines. This move underscores the changes in Boeing's supply chain and order situation. The company had actually hoped to already deliver the successor to the 777-300ER, the 777X. But the 777X program is suffering from significant delays, and delivery of the first 777-9 is now not expected until 2026 at the earliest. The cargo version, the 777-8, is also not expected to be launched until 2028. However, Boeing plans to begin test flights of the 777X soon. Media reports suggest that these flights will take place shortly, although the company has not yet officially confirmed this. The delays in the 777X program, particularly the challenges with certification, have significantly delayed the launch of the new model.
