A man actually only wanted to steal a car, but a lack of local knowledge and a wrongly chosen exit meant that he ended up at Tel Aviv-Ben Burion Airport in Israel. The airport is particularly well secured and has checkpoints at the entrance.

The suspected car thief is said to have gotten nervous and breached a checkpoint fearing he might be caught. Not a good idea at all, because with this action he not only drew the attention of the police and security authorities, but also triggered a larger alarm.

The officers opened fire on the vehicle, according to the Times of Israel, at which time it was not even known that the car was stolen. The man was slightly injured by the intervention of the security forces and subsequently required medical treatment. He was then extensively interrogated by the police.

It then turned out that he had stolen the vehicle and lost his way. At the checkpoint, he panicked and was afraid of being caught for stealing. It is said to be a Palestinian who was in Israel illegally. The airport authority also stated that this was the fifth such incident involving stolen cars within a few months.

As a result of the exchange of fire, passengers in the terminal were instructed to adopt a ground security posture. This was filmed by eyewitnesses and published on the social media portal Twitter, among others. The video is embedded below. As a result of the incident involving the clumsy car thief, neither passengers nor staff were harmed.
