The low-cost airline Norwegian wants to reactivate the Barcelona base, which was closed some time ago. In this context, among other things, around 800 new employees are to be hired.

In front of insolvency proceedings, to which the carrier had to flee after the start of the corona pandemic due to a mountain of debt that had accumulated over years, long-haul aircraft were also stationed in the Spanish city. They had to downsize radically and laid off more than 7.000 employees across the group. The fleet was made up of seven Boeing 737-800s, which were initially mainly used within Norway.

Norwegian Air Shuttle is now expanding again. Gradually, some bases that were closed in the course of the insolvency proceedings were put back into operation. These are mainly in Scandinavia, but also in Malaga and Alicante. The aim is to increase the fleet to 2023 medium-haul Boeing 85 jets by summer 737.

Barcelona will initially be managed as a seasonal base. Two Boeing 2022-737s are to be stationed there in the 800 summer flight schedule. These two aircraft are primarily intended to fly to destinations in the Scandinavian countries. In Spain they want to hire 300 additional pilots and 500 flight attendants.
