The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has clearly cut its wings since the beginning of the new lockdown in Austria. The offer has been greatly reduced and some routes will be paused throughout the entire winter timetable period 2021/22.

The number of routes offered from Vienna is only 2021 in December 17. 36 flights are offered per week. The announced new flights to Akaba and Amman as well as temporary flights between Christmas and New Year are not taken into account. On most of the routes that Wizz Air has not canceled, the frequencies have in some cases been severely reduced. For example, one only flies to Milan-Malpensa twice a week and pauses Rome completely.

“Since Austria went into lockdown, bookings and willingness to travel have declined. We always react dynamically to market conditions and have done that here too. These are not permanent cuts, but we had to take steps that followed the movements of the market, ”said Wizz Air spokesman András Rado, commenting on the recent cuts.

In stark contrast to this, competitor Ryanair asserts that, with the exception of Agadir, the flight plan can be carried out unchanged. There is still a high level of demand in Vienna.

According to the current state of affairs, Wizz Air will offer 2022 flights per week to 62 destinations in January and February 26. 2022 weekly rotations to 84 destinations are currently planned for March 32. For comparison: In December 2021 there were 36 flights per week to 17 destinations, whereby Amman and Aqaba are not taken into account and temporary resumption is also not included. Examples of short-term service between Christmas and New Year are the routes to Dortmund and Cologne.
