Belavia facing major job cuts

The airline Belavia is currently undesirable due to political decisions in the EU airspace and at the airports in the Union. This may also have a significant impact on the workforce as it is reported that around half of the workforce is to be cut.

Belarus is preparing for the ban to last even longer. Management therefore apparently assumes that fewer pilots and flight attendants will be needed in the long term. They now want to reduce this and in independent media there is talk of halving the workforce.

Belavia and Belarus do not want to leave this as it is and in a conversation with the Russian news broadcaster RBK they point out that there is no talk of 50 percent reduction in the workforce. “In the current circumstances, cutting costs, reporting downtime, or optimizing staff numbers are uncomfortable but logical steps. At the same time, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that personnel decisions in this situation can only be made on the recommendation of the department head and only taking into account the current volume of work. Mass reductions are not taken into account. The situation is complicated by the fact that the airline has only recently started to recover from massive flight cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. There were no downsizing during the pandemic. Cost reductions were achieved by reducing allowances and working hours, ”said the carrier.
