Berlin-Brandenburg Airport recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers in June 2021. In a direct comparison with May 2021, almost twice as many travelers use the airport. Around 653.000 passengers were counted.
One reason for the increase is the lower incidence figures in Europe and the associated relaxation of travel restrictions in several countries as well as the beginning of the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg. A year ago, in the crisis month of June 2020, almost 170.000 passengers were handled at the former Schönefeld and Tegel airports; in June 2019 there were almost 3,3 million passengers.
Last month there were around 7.700 flight movements at BER, around 2.300 more than in the previous month of May. In June 2020 only around 3.800 machines took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel, in June 2019 there were around 26.000 machines. In the case of air freight, around 2.200 tons of goods were handled last June, roughly the same as in May 2021. In June 2019, the month before the crisis, it was just under 3.000 tons.
“The increase in the number of passengers shows that travel is picking up again, especially with the start of holidays. After the long crisis, people long for a break and take the vaccination offers very seriously. Destinations in the Mediterranean region such as Greece, Spain, Turkey and Italy are particularly popular. Even if the pre-crisis level of 2019 is far from being reached, that is a good sign. For the weekend (July 2.7nd to 4.7.2021th, 40.000) we expect more than XNUMX passengers in one day for the first time, ”says BER boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup.
